Shane's Math

Shane loves math and is doing really well with it. This is some that he's gotten really good at. He's currently doing basic addition and subtraction under 20.

Suncatchers

Seems painting has become the new biggest hit around here. Not just painting paper, but painting objects. These suncatchers were a lot of fun, although I don't think I had the best paint for them, they were still able to paint them up nice. It was fun watching them put thought into how they wanted to paint their suncatcher. Lindsey did a butterfly and Shane did a cross.

Painting Fun

We have been having a lot of fun painting. I found these cute bird houses and they enjoyed painting them. Lindsey's favorite color is pink and Shane's favorite color is red.

Lindsey loves the color wonder paints and books.

Shane also received a dinosaur to paint and really enjoyed it as well.

USA

Shane is really getting into maps. We are starting with one state at a time and doing a project on it. I have to admit, that I'm having fun learning new things about the states. Did you know that Missouri has a "State Musical Instrument"? It's the fiddle. We've also learned that the Albertosaurus dinosaur fossils have been found in Missouri. The Albertosaurus is a relative of the T-Rex... and we all know how cool that is! It will be fun to learn more about each state.

School Time

The kids love having "school time". I find it a lot of fun to keep them challenged and interested. We usually try to do the reading, spelling, and writing of the mornings.

Lindsey knows the alphabet and is currently working on learning all of the letter sounds. She's doing great with knowing the sounds and recognizing most letters. She is also learning to write her name, which she finds very exciting. We have just recently started learning to write the alphabet. She tends to get bored with the entire alphabet, so we usually just do 1/2 one day and the other 1/2 the next day.

Lindsey also enjoys workbooks and is currently working preschool and kindergarten material.

Shane flies through the workbooks I have for him. They are kindergarten and 1st grade material. The repetitive nature of these books keeps him up on what he has learned.

He's always asking me to try to 'stump him' and he loves a challenge.

One of Shane's favorite things to do is to measure things. I found a fun worksheet that included a ruler. He had fun measuring all sorts of things.

Friendship Bread

My sister passed this on to me and I'm anxious to make it. The kids help me with the instructions. Today we are simply to "mash the bag". They love to help with that part. Day's 1-4, you "mash the bag". Day 5, you add a few ingredients. Days 6-9, you "mash the bag" more. On day 10, you divide it up and pass it on to more friends, and bake your part. We have to be sure and hang on to a portion to continue to have bread every 10 days.

Nap Time??

The kids decided they wanted to take a nap with Brady and this is what I found when I walked in the room. Shane has learned how to latch and un-latch the door from inside. They thought this was the "most awesome" thing!

Fun at the Park

Even though it is technically winter, in the middle of February, we had a beautiful day and decided to spend some time at the park.

While there, Lindsey wanted to get in the baby swing. It's amazing what a difference 3 years can make. This is Lindsey at 5 months and then at 3 1/2 years. She's in the same swing at the same park.

New to "Blogging"

I thought it would be fun to create this blog for a journal. I find writing to be very theraputic and it may help me have it all in one place. It's been a roller coaster ride for sure. I will introduce my two little ones and also give some information about our journey so far in parenthood. As I'm sure everyone has, we have had our ups and downs. I look forward to putting my thoughts down and outlining our special days. So please bear with me as I get caught up with past things I want to share here.

Getting to Know Shane

Shane Carl was born on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 1:24 PM. He was 6 lbs 10 oz and was 18 3/4" long. He was our first and we couldn't have been more proud. We waited 12 long years for him.

From early on, Shane loved me to read books to him. As soon as he could walk, he enjoyed going to the book shelf and picking out the next one to read. It wouldn't be nothing to go through 15-20 books at one sitting. He learned his letter sounds early, but didn't have much of a vocabulary. It wasn't until he was 2 1/2 that we found out he was tongue tied and had that corrected. With a little help from speech class, his vocabulary really took off and he hasn't stopped talking!!

Shane has had a rough go of it with kids his own age, as he can get too handsy. But you couldn't ask for a better boy at home. He rarely threw a tantrum or fit, and has always easily went to time out when needed. He also is easy to compromise with and was a good listener for me.

His academic abilities continued to grow. He couldn't get enough and wanted to know about everything. He always seems to keep me on my toes and challenged. By the age of 2, he had his letter sounds down pat, was counting in english and spanish, and showing a really good memory. By the age of 5, he has really advanced greatly to include reading and writing complete sentences, counting in french too, able to tell basic time, knows his left from right, can tell directions, is doing simple math and fractions. He can count to 1oo and recognizes those numbers in writing, as well as being able to write them. He does well with a calendar, can cut, loves to paint, and so much more. He continues to amaze me!

Shane's favorite color is red and he loves trains and dinosaurs. He also loves spiderman!! He loves to help out around the house, but has found a great love with computers over the past year. He also enjoys video games. But he's really become independent lately with what he can do. He can fix his own drinks, makes his bed (and helps his sister make hers), and helps me with so much around the house. As with his sister, he loves to brush his teeth.

Shane has always been tall for his age. Off the charts tall, actually. His weight has always been around the 75%, so even though he's tall, he's proportioned. We don't know where he's gotten his height from, but he seems to grow over night!

Shane has a great imagination and loves make up stories to tell. He has the brightest blue/green eyes and has a smile that always makes me smile. He doesn't know a stranger and loves to talk to anyone that he may see.
I think it will be great to mark what he knows now and have this for future reference.
As of today, Shane can:
* Say the entire alphabet
* Knows all of the sounds to every letter
* Recognizes all letters, upper case and lower case
* Will sound out any word he sees, phonetically
* Recognizes about 100 sightwords

Getting to Know Lindsey

Lindsey Nicole was born on Friday, July 29, 2005 at 8:45 AM. She was 7 lbs 12 oz and was 19" long. She's the only girl in the family as my sister has 2 boys and we had Shane first. Being the only girl has been to her advantage as you can imagine. She is absolutely spoiled rotten and has everyone wrapped around her little finger.

Lindsey loves to play games, work puzzles, color and paint. She enjoys hearing a story, but not near as into books as Shane was and is. She loves to dress up and would change her clothes 10 times a day if I would let her. She does great at changing her own clothes, brushing her teeth, putting her shoes on, and going to the bathroom all on her own. She's a big girl now!!

Lindsey's favorite color is pink and she loves princess characters and fairies. She likes to watch some TV, but would rather play a game or paint. She likes to help me cook and even do housework.

She was always our little peanut until recently when it seemed she had a growth spurt. Or maybe it was more that she was an "average" size compared to her brother who was always tall for his age. She has recently shot up and thinks she is all grown up now.

Lindsey started talking VERY early, another big difference between her and her brother. She talks up a storm constantly. She doesn't know a stranger and will strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. She has the prettiest smile, the most beautiful eyes, and knows exactly how to melt anyone's heart. She gives the best hugs and loves to blow kisses. She dances away, has a great imagination, loves to tell stories, and can really ham it up to get your attention.
I think it will be fun to list the things that she can do now so I can mark her progress down the road.
As of today, Lindsey can:
* Say the entire alphabet
* Can tell me the sounds of about half of the letters of the alphabet
* Can recognize about half of the letters right the first time asked
* Can write the letters L, I, N, D, S, E, Y, A, C, F, H, O, T without help or seeing an example.
* She can write all letters with help or seeing an example.
* She is currently only writing upper case letters on her own.
* She can write all lower case letters with help or seeing an example.
* Can retell a story she was told.
* She recognizes square, triangle, rectangle, circle, and oval.
* She recognizes colors - red, yellow, blue, green, orange, black, purple, brown, white, pink
* She can count to 10 perfectly
* She can count to 30 with a little help* She can recognize numbers 1-5
* She can write numbers 1-10 with help
* She can recognize and spell her first name

Our Adventure Up To Now!

It's not supposed to be this difficult!! Since Shane turned 3, it seems it has been one big struggle after another concerning school and related activities. We never suspected a thing as he was such a good baby, good toddler, and seemed very bright! But it wasn't his academics that was the concern, but his social abilities with kids his own age.

Shane didn't talk much early on. He made sounds, but didn't speak many words. At 18 months, he was able to sound out all of the letters of the alphabet, but putting words together seemed difficult for him. At the age of 2, he was using letters to spell words such as God, cat, and dog. But yet, he still wasn't speaking much. It was also around this time that we started to notice that he was rough at times. His whole life to this point, he had just played with his cousins, who were much older than he was. He played rough. With his older cousins, he was able to play that way with no worries. And they were all he knew for the first couple years of his life.

When he did get around kids his own age/size, we noticed he wanted to play rough with them as well. He would hug too tight until they all fell down. He would tackle, push, pull, grab, touch, and laugh the whole time. He wanted to play with everyone like he did his cousins and his grown up family members. He also used his physical touch to try to communicate better. He understood everything we said, but just couldn't get his words out right. But it was like he didn't or couldn't respect or understand other's personal space.

At 2 1/2, we realized that he was tongue tied, literally. We had that corrected and after a couple of months, he did pick up on his vocabulary. At 3, he still wasn't where he should be, so we had him evaluated for speech, of which he did qualify for. In October of 2006, he started speech class to help him get caught up. By December, he was doing so well that he was caught up to age appropriate speech, but continued on to work on some extra things. He did great, loved his teacher, and never gave her any problems. She always had great things to say about him.

At 3, we put him in Sunday school where he actually did quite well. His teacher was experienced and we had talked several times about Shane. She assured me that while he was energetic, she knew how to keep him busy. She redirected him when necessary and didn't have any major concerns for me. After a few months, the teacher retired and a new teacher took her place. And just 2 Sunday's into it, the new teacher pretty much told me that Shane did not belong there as she could not control him. She put him in time-out and he stayed there the whole hour. That is one thing about Shane as he would easily go to time-out and stay there.

At home, when we would put him in time-out, he would go with me just simply pointing at the chair. No tantrum or fit about it. I would have him count as this seemed to change his mind set away from what he was doing. He would count in English to 20 or more, then in Spanish to 10 and then in French to 10.

We enrolled him in preschool just after he turned 4. We explained to the teacher about our concerns with his social skills. She seemed up beat about being able to help him saying that preschool was just the place for him. But, after just a few days, the teacher had concerns about his behavior and asked me to come in and observe.

Observing in the classroom was actually quite fun. I had fun interacting with the children and being a part of this with Shane. I did see a lot that I didn't really like as there was a lot of unsupervised "roaming" time. This was not the right environment for Shane who needed help making good social choices... not to be left on his own. So, me being there, when I heard or saw Shane start to get wound up, I would simply redirect him and that helped completely. When I was no longer able to help out in the classroom, and add to that the main teacher left on medical leave for a couple of months, I knew something had to be done. The teacher in charge in the regular teacher's absence was not handling it well, in tears a few times due to feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility. There were 20 kids in the class. Too many kids, especially for Shane.

So we kept doing what we normally do at home. Reading tons of books, working with letters, sounds, and numbers. Shane was like a little sponge, loving anything he could learn. He was full of questions and wanted to know about everything and anything.

Because Shane's birthday is in the summer, he's not far from our cut off date to start school. We had decided to wait on sending him to kindergarten to give him that extra year of maturity. If he continued to excel and did well in school, he could always graduate early if he wanted to.

The same goes for his little sister, Lindsey, who was born when Shane was 2. Her birthday is also in late summer and we will also wait to send her to kindergarten. Things are so different now than when I went to school. The kids, teacher's, school, academics, peer pressure, etc. It's all so different and a much harder world to grow up in.

In August of 2008, we found a different preschool to send Shane to. It was a Christian based private preschool where we thought he should do well. Again, we spoke to the teacher and the principal about our concerns with Shane and what we expect and hope for him in the classroom. Having met them one-on-one, they felt he would do great. There were only 7 kids in the class with a teacher AND an aide. How could this not be a good thing?

Well, it didn't take long before the teacher had a talk with me about his behavior. I still did not understand how this could happen with such a small class size and 2 teachers. So I started going and observing/helping out in the classroom. I spent a LOT of time there. Shane's behavior aside, I saw and heard things from the teacher that were over the line and so wrong that I couldn't believe she was teaching preschool children.

This teacher acted like she was going to hit the children, she also made comments about the kids being dead. She did not supervise the children, was unorganized, had no problem solving skills, and no preparation. She was always very negative about Shane. I spoke with the principal twice, but nothing was done. Other parents were just as concerned, but no one else wanted to stir up anything afraid to get involve with the school in that manner. They were just hoping to make it through the year.

I feel bad for him as it feels it's always something. I was blaming myself for the longest time. Maybe I'm too picky? Too paranoid? Too over-protective? I guess if I am, that's too bad. He's my child and I will protect him.

So, here we are, just doing our own thing at home. We are involved in Parent's As Teacher's and get a visit every month. This lady is a retired elementary teacher and she is amazed by Shane's academic ability. Shane has really matured and grown up over the past year. He has made great improvements, although still not always "hands off". I think that if the teacher would have been better at that private preschool, we could have seen even more improvements with him. That's too bad.

Shane rarely has tantrums or fits since he was born. He's easy to compromise with, easy to reason with, and listens to me. Lindsey doesn't throw trantrums either, but she has the pout down pat! She works her "cuteness" and it usually gets her far. Ha! I enjoy taking them both out with me shopping or to run errands.

Shane is my academic nut, loving to read, spell, write, do math, and learn about anything. Lindsey is more of my art girl, loving to draw, paint, color, and make pretty things. Lindsey is our sassy one. She is the handful, the one to tell us like it is, and definitely has a mind of her own.

Being home with both of them is such a blessing. I really enjoy it. It's not been how I imagined with the problems in school, but I think God has other plans for us and I should just stop trying to fight it. I've never been the one to do something simply because everyone else does and I'm not afraid to make my own decisions. Just sometimes it can be hard to know what is the right thing to do. I had my own dreams and thoughts on how things would be and I'm starting to come to reality that things don't always work out like we had planned. And that's ok... it really is ok. Actually, better than ok.
